One of the true cathedrals of the American whiskey industry, the Stitzel-Weller Distillery originally gained legendary status among bourbon connoisseurs because it was opened and run by Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle for much of its history. Today, Diageo has brought the distillery grounds back to life with it’s Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience. Located just five miles from downtown Louisville, it’s one of the most convenient and impressive along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
Originally opened on Derby Day in 1935 and reopened to the public in 2014.
As a tavern keeper in the 1830s in Louisville, Kentucky, Augustus Bulleit made a high-rye whiskey.
One day, while transporting his bourbon from Kentucky to New Orleans, Augustus Bulleit mysteriously vanished and what happened to him is still unknown today.
